Mark Street Gardens was laid out alongside St Michael's Church (now closed) which was built between 1863 and 1865. The old church is separated by a wide flagstone path. There is a memorial to Sidney Smith who died in1870 with the inscription 'in affectionate Memory of Sidney Smith'.

Mark Street Gardens is hidden quiet gem walking distance from the hustle and bustle of Great Eastern Street. There are many areas to sit and relax. The gardens consists of a series of small spaces with winding earth paths providing areas of lawn, shrubberies and flower beds, including aromatic plants, and a pergola in the centre of which is a stone monument.
